Kumkum and Sindoor
Kumkum (कुमकुम) and Sindoor (सिंदूर) are both vermillion powders, applied to the deity and to devotees as tilak, and central to Devi Rituals and Lakshmi Rituals in particular. Sindoor carries additional significance in marriage — offered to the Hanuman deity as described in our Hanuman Rituals guide, and applied by married women as a mark of their status, connecting to the rituals in our Marriage Rituals guide.
Haldi and Chandan
Haldi Powder (हल्दी), turmeric, is mandatory across household and festival worship and is central to the pre-wedding Haldi ceremony described in Marriage Rituals. Chandan Powder (चंदन), sandalwood, is both a cooling paste and a mandatory offering across most puja, corresponding to the Chandan Jal (sandalwood water) described in our Liquids and Panchamrit guide.
Bhasma and Ashtagandha
Bhasma/Vibhuti (भस्म/विभूति), sacred ash, is mandatory in Shiva worship, symbolising the impermanence of the material body — see our Shiva Rituals guide. Ashtagandha, an eight-herb sandalwood blend of premium quality, is a more refined optional offering used across various formal rituals.
Colour Powder
