Ten Hanuman rituals, from the daily recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa to the annual celebration of Hanuman Jayanti, drawn from Avyani's Master Puja & Ritual Catalogue.
Hanuman (हनुमान) — devoted servant of Rama, embodiment of strength, courage and selfless service — is among the most widely worshipped deities in India, invoked especially for protection, courage and the removal of difficulties. Avyani's Master Puja & Ritual Catalogue records ten distinct Hanuman rituals.
Everyday Devotion
A simple Hanuman Puja, offered with sindoor (vermillion) and a diya, is a common Tuesday and Saturday practice across India, often opened with a short salutation:
ॐ हनुमते नमः
Om Hanumate Namah — "Om, salutations to Hanuman" — is one of the simplest ways Hanuman is invoked before longer recitation. The Hanuman Chalisa (हनुमान चालीसा) — Tulsidas's forty-verse hymn, composed in Awadhi rather than Sanskrit — and the shorter, more forceful Bajrang Baan (बजरंग बाण) are among the most recited devotional texts in the Hindu tradition, valued for their accessibility and the protection they are believed to invoke. Hanuman Ashtottara Archana, offering his 108 names, is a fuller devotional practice for the same purpose.
Protection and Strength
Hanuman Protection Puja is sought specifically in times of difficulty or obstruction, while Sindoor Puja — the traditional offering of vermillion to the Hanuman murti — is a distinctive and widely practised mark of devotion. Panchmukhi Hanuman Puja, addressed to his five-faced form, is worshipped for more comprehensive protection.
Hanuman Jayanti and Pilgrimage
Hanuman Jayanti, the annual celebration of his birth, is marked with elaborate worship, recitation and community gatherings. Salasar Balaji Puja is associated with pilgrimage to the well-known Hanuman shrine at Salasar in Rajasthan — one of many regional centres of Hanuman devotion across the country.
Fire Ritual
A Hanuman Homam invokes Hanuman through Agni for strength and protection, typically undertaken for significant undertakings or during periods of hardship, led by a priest.
