Every flower and leaf offered in worship is chosen with intention — some simply for their beauty and fragrance, others reserved for a specific deity or occasion. This section of Avyani's Master Samagri Catalogue walks through twenty-one flowers and leaves and the meaning behind each.
Flowers (पुष्प) and leaves (पत्र) are among the five classical offerings of the Panchopachara method described in our Daily Worship guide, and several carry a meaning or association specific to one deity or observance. Avyani's Master Samagri Catalogue records ten flowers and eleven leaves.
Everyday Flowers
Marigold (गेंदा) and loose mixed flowers are the most common mandatory offerings, widely available and used across virtually every puja. Hibiscus (जपाकुसुम), jasmine and rose are popular optional offerings, each simply adding beauty and fragrance to worship. A flower garland (पुष्प माला) is mandatory for larger or festival worship, placed around the deity's image or murti.
Flowers with a Specific Association
The Lotus (कमल), a seasonal item, is especially associated with Devi and Lakshmi worship — see our Devi Rituals and Lakshmi Rituals guides. Aparajita flower is likewise used specifically for Devi worship, while Datura flower is offered specifically to Shiva, connecting to our Shiva Rituals guide — despite being toxic if consumed, it holds a particular place in Shiva's iconography and worship. Champa is a fragrant seasonal offering used across various traditions.
Mandatory Leaves by Deity
Bilva Patra (बिल्व पत्र), bael leaves, are a mandatory, seasonal offering specific to Shiva worship — central to Rudrabhishek and other rituals in our Shiva Rituals guide. Durva Grass (दूर्वा) is mandatory specifically for Ganesha worship, described throughout our Ganapati Rituals guide. Tulsi Leaves (तुलसी पत्र) are mandatory for all Vishnu worship, appearing throughout our Vishnu Rituals guide and in the daily Tulsi Puja described in Daily Worship.
Ritual and Seasonal Leaves
Kush Grass (Darbha) is a dry, mandatory item used in Shraddha and other Vedic rites — see our Shraddha and Pitru Karma guide. Mango Leaves, strung as toran, are mandatory for auspicious occasions and doorway decoration. Betel Leaves (Paan) are mandatory and widely used both in worship and as a mark of respect in Naivedya offerings. Turmeric Plant leaves are used specifically for Makar Sankranti and Pongal, described in our Surya Rituals guide, and Vat (Banyan) Leaves are used specifically for the Vat Savitri Vrat.
