Scriptural and Historical Significance
- Puranic Reference: The Shiva Purana (Kotirudra Samhita) and the Kashi Khand of the Skanda Purana call Kashi Shiva's beloved city, the "Avimukta Kshetra" (the region never forsaken); it is believed that even at the pralaya (cosmic dissolution) Shiva holds this city safe upon His trident, and that He grants the Taraka Mantra to those who leave their bodies here.
- Invasions and Reconstruction: In 1194 CE the army of Qutbuddin Aibak destroyed the temple; the temple later rebuilt was damaged again. In 1585 CE Pt. Narayan Bhatt rebuilt it with the support of Raja Todar Mal; in 1669 CE it was demolished on the orders of Aurangzeb and the Gyanvapi Mosque was built on the site.
- Present Temple: The present temple was built in 1780 CE by Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore. Around 1835 CE Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab donated gold for gilding the shikhara and domes.
- Kashi Vishwanath Dham: The "Shri Kashi Vishwanath Dham" corridor, connecting the temple directly to the Ganga bank (Lalita Ghat), was dedicated to the public on 13 December 2021.
