Cloth and thread carry meaning well beyond the material itself in Hindu worship — a stole draped over Devi, a thread tied at the wrist to mark a vow or a blessing. This section of Avyani's Master Samagri Catalogue gathers thirteen cloth and sacred thread items, from the Kalash cover cloth to the Rakhi.
Cloth and thread mark transitions and protect the sacred — from the vestments draped over a deity to the thread tied around a devotee's wrist. Avyani's Master Samagri Catalogue records eight cloth items and five sacred threads, thirteen in total, all but one of them mandatory.
Cloth for the Deity
The Kalash Cover Cloth (कलश वस्त्र), a mandatory item, is draped over the Kalash described in our Kalash and Utensils guide. A New Clothes Pair (Vastra Yugal) is a mandatory gift offered to the deity in most formal worship, described throughout our Daily Worship guide, while the Deity Vastra (Silk Robe) is an optional, premium-quality alternative reserved for larger occasions.
Devi and Marriage Cloth
Chunri/Odhni (चुनरी), a sacred stole, and Red Cloth (लाल वस्त्र) are both mandatory offerings especially connected to Devi worship, described in our Devi Rituals guide, and both also feature in the bridal rituals of our Marriage Rituals guide.
Colour-Coded Cloth
Yellow Cloth (पीला वस्त्र), a mandatory item, is associated with Vishnu worship, described throughout our Vishnu Rituals guide. White Cloth (सफेद वस्त्र), also mandatory, is used in ancestral rites described in our Shraddha and Pitru Karma guide. The Navagraha Nine-Colour Cloth Set, mandatory, is used specifically for Navagraha rituals — see our Navagraha and Dosha Nivaran guide.
Sacred Threads
Mauli/Kalawa (मौली/कलावा), a mandatory sacred red thread, is tied at the wrist in nearly every puja described in our Daily Worship guide. Traditionally, it is understood as a thread of protection and commitment, tying the wearer's intention to the ritual being performed. The Janeu (Yagyopavit) (जनेऊ/यज्ञोपवीत), a mandatory sacred thread, is conferred during the Upanayana samskara described in our Sixteen Samskaras guide. The Kankan Dhaga (Wrist Thread Set) is mandatory and used for both marriage and mundan ceremonies, connecting to our Marriage Rituals and Sixteen Samskaras guides.
Occasion-Specific Threads
The Pavitri (Kusha Ring) (पवित्री), a mandatory ring of kusha grass, is worn specifically during Shraddha and Tarpan, described in our Shraddha and Pitru Karma guide. The Rakhi (Protection Thread) (राखी) is mandatory for Raksha Bandhan, described in our Festival Rituals guide.
