Vishnu Rituals: Worship of Vishnu, Rama and Krishna

Thirty-three Vishnu rituals across the Vaishnava sampradayas — Satyanarayan Puja, the Dashavatara, and the Krishna and Jagannath traditions among them — drawn from Avyani's Master Puja & Ritual Catalogue.

Worship of Vishnu spans His own form and each of His avataras, and is central to the Vaishnava sampradayas practised across India — Sri Vaishnava, Gaudiya, Madhva, Pushti Marg, Swaminarayan and others. Avyani's Master Puja & Ritual Catalogue documents thirty-three Vishnu rituals, from a short daily puja to the multi-day Jagannath Rath Yatra.

Everyday Worship

A standard Vishnu Puja, offered with tulsi leaves and the sixteen-step (shodashopachara) sequence, needs no priest and takes under an hour, often accompanied by Vishnu's own twelve-syllable mantra:

ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय

Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya — "Om, salutations to the Blessed Lord Vasudeva" — is among the most widely recited Vaishnava mantras, addressed to Vishnu in his fundamental form as Vasudeva. Vishnu Sahasranama Archana, offering the thousand names of Vishnu, is a widely loved devotional practice built on the same spirit of naming and remembrance. Ekadashi Vrat — fasting on the eleventh lunar day, observed fortnightly — is one of the most commonly kept Vaishnava vows, with Vaikunta Ekadashi regarded as the most sacred occasion in the yearly cycle.

Satyanarayan Puja and Household Worship

Satyanarayan Puja, in which the Satyanarayan Katha is narrated to family and guests, is among the most popular Vishnu rituals nationwide and is performed on full moons, house-warmings, anniversaries and other happy occasions. Lakshmi Narayan Puja, worshipping Vishnu together with Goddess Lakshmi, is likewise a common household and festival observance.

The Dashavatara — Ten Avataras

Dashavatara Puja honours Vishnu's ten principal descents, and several are also worshipped individually: Matsya, Kurma and Varaha for the protection and stability of creation; Narasimha for courage and protection, along with the protective Narasimha Kavacha recitation; Vamana and Parashurama; and Rama and Krishna, whose worship has grown into entire devotional traditions of their own — including Ram Navami and Krishna Janmashtami, the annual celebrations of their births.

Krishna, Jagannath and Regional Temple Traditions

Krishna is worshipped in many forms: as Bal Gopal, the infant deity kept and cared for daily in many homes; as Jagannath, whose ongoing daily seva cycle and the grand Rath Yatra chariot procession are followed at Puri and its affiliated temples; and, within specific sampradayas, through the ISKCON deity aarti and kirtan tradition, the Nathdwara Shrinathji seva of the Pushti Marg, and the Swaminarayan Thakorji seva. Venkateswara Puja and the Srinivasa Kalyanam wedding re-enactment centre on the deity enshrined at Tirumala, while Ranganatha Puja and Panduranga Vitthal Puja honour Vishnu's reclining and standing forms at Srirangam and Pandharpur respectively.

Protective and Healing Forms

Sudarshana Puja and Sudarshana Homam invoke Vishnu's discus for protection from adversity, while Dhanvantari Puja and Dhanvantari Homam are directed to Vishnu's form as the divine physician, sought for health and before medical procedures. Hayagriva Puja, to Vishnu's horse-headed form, is associated with knowledge and learning.
