Jaap and Paath: Mantra and Scriptural Recitation

Two related daily and periodic practices — Jaap, the repeated recitation of a mantra, and Paath, the reading of a scriptural text — drawn from Avyani's Master Puja & Ritual Catalogue.

Two related but distinct devotional practices sit alongside formal puja in daily and periodic worship: Jaap (जाप), the repetitive recitation of a mantra using a mala, and Paath (पाठ), the recitation or reading of a scriptural text. Avyani's Master Puja & Ritual Catalogue records ten Jaap rituals and twelve Paath rituals.

Jaap — Mantra Recitation

Jaap is typically a personal sadhana requiring no priest: Gayatri Mantra Jaap and Om Namah Shivaya Jaap (the Panchakshari mantra) are among the most widely practised, alongside deity-specific recitations such as Vishnu Sahasranama Jaap, Durga Mantra Jaap and Lakshmi Mantra Jaap. Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra Jaap is often undertaken as a sustained practice — commonly for 108 or 1008 repetitions, or across 40 days — for health and protection. Navagraha Mantra Jaap and Shani Mantra Jaap address planetary concerns discussed in our Navagraha and Dosha Nivaran guide, while Kali Mantra Jaap, a Tantric practice, is typically undertaken with a priest's guidance.

Paath — Scriptural Recitation

Paath ranges from a short daily reading to multi-day continuous recitation. Bhagavad Gita Paath and Vishnu Sahasranama Paath are commonly read in part or whole as a regular practice — see our Understanding the Bhagavad Gita guide. Ramayana Paath, the recitation of Valmiki's Ramayana or Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas, is often read in daily portions, while Akhand Ramayan Path is an uninterrupted 24-hour recitation carried out in relay by multiple reciters. Sundarkand Path, the chapter dedicated to Hanuman's exploits, is a popular standalone recitation — see our Hanuman Rituals guide.

Extended Discourse and Multi-Day Recitation

Bhagavata Purana Saptaha, a seven-day continuous discourse on the Srimad Bhagavatam, and the related Vishnu Purana Bhagwat Katha, are substantial community or family undertakings typically led by a katha vachak (scriptural narrator). Garuda Purana Path, traditionally recited after a death in the family, connects to the ancestral rites described in our Shraddha and Pitru Karma guide. Guru Charitra Path, a seven-day recitation of a sacred biography within the Dattatreya tradition, follows a similar extended format.

Shorter Devotional Hymns

Saraswati Stotra Path and the Shiva Tandava Stotram — the powerful hymn traditionally attributed to Ravana in praise of Shiva — are shorter recitations, each taking fifteen to twenty minutes, suitable for daily or occasional personal practice.
