Homam, Havan and Yajna: Vedic and Agama Fire Traditions

Thirty-five Vedic and Agama fire rituals — Homam, Havan and Yajna — through which offerings are made to the deities via Agni, drawn from Avyani's Master Puja & Ritual Catalogue.

Fire ritual traditions branch into three related but distinct categories in Avyani's Master Puja & Ritual Catalogue: Homam (होमम्), the Agama-tradition fire rituals typical of South Indian temple practice; Havan (हवन), the Grihya Sutra-based domestic fire rituals of North Indian household practice; and Yajna (यज्ञ), large-scale, often multi-day Vedic sacrificial rites for community or cosmic welfare. Together they cover thirty-five rituals — the deity-invoking counterpart to the everyday havan materials described in our Havan Samagri guide.

Homam — The Agama Tradition

Homams are typically named for the deity invoked: Gayatri Homam, Vishnu Homam, Durga Homam and Saraswati Homam address general welfare, protection, success and wisdom respectively. Ayushya Homam and the combined Ganapati Ayushya Homam are performed for long life and health, often for children. Navagraha Shanti Homam and Nakshatra Shanti Homam address planetary and birth-star afflictions — see our Navagraha and Dosha Nivaran guide — while Mrityunjaya Maha Homam and Ekadasha Rudra Homam are extended, large-scale versions reserved for critical health situations, connecting to our Shiva Rituals guide.

Havan — The Grihya Sutra Tradition

Havans are the North Indian household counterpart to the temple homam, sharing many of the same deity-specific forms — Rudra Havan, Durga Havan, Vishnu Havan and Navagraha Havan — performed at home rather than in a temple setting. Several Havans are integral to specific samskaras discussed in our Sixteen Samskaras and Marriage Rituals guides: Mundan Havan accompanies the first tonsure, Yagyopavit Havan the sacred thread ceremony, and Vivah Havan is the central fire around which a couple takes their seven wedding vows. Punyahavachanam Havan is a preliminary purification performed before these larger rites, and Shanti Havan is a general-purpose peace ritual for undefined negative influences.

Yajna — Vedic Sacrificial Rites

Yajnas are the most elaborate and historically significant fire rites, several referenced directly in the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Putrakameshti Yajna, performed for couples seeking children, appears in the Ramayana's account of Rama's birth. Vishwashanti Maha Yajna is a large community rite for collective wellbeing, still performed today. Agnichayana — involving the construction of an elaborate falcon-shaped fire altar over twelve days — along with the historical Vajapeya, Rajasuya and Ashvamedha Yajnas, are retained in Avyani's catalogue for research completeness; these are rarely performed in their full historical form today.
