Devi Rituals: Worship of the Divine Mother

Forty-one Devi rituals, spanning Navratri, the Dasha Mahavidyas and Goddess traditions rooted in every corner of India, drawn from Avyani's Master Puja & Ritual Catalogue.

The Divine Mother is worshipped across India in an extraordinary range of forms — gentle and fierce, domestic and cosmic, pan-Indian and intensely local. With forty-one recorded rituals, Devi Rituals is the largest single category in Avyani's Master Puja & Ritual Catalogue, reflecting the sheer multiplicity of Her forms across Shakta, Tantra and Purana traditions.

Navratri and Durga Puja

The nine nights of Navratri are built around Ghatasthapana, the installation of the sacred kalash that opens the observance, followed by day-wise worship of the Nava Durga — the nine forms from Shailaputri to Siddhidatri. Many households and communities also recite the Durga Saptashati (also called the Devi Mahatmyam), a 700-verse text, across the nine days — including one of its most repeated closing verses:

या देवी सर्वभूतेषु शक्तिरूपेण संस्थिता।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥

Durga Saptashati (Devi Mahatmyam)

"To the Goddess who dwells in all beings in the form of Shakti (power), salutations again and again." The verse repeats for each of Her many qualities named across the text — power, peace, intelligence and more — and is often the line devotees remember even when the fuller recitation is not. The festival closes with Vijayadashami, marking Durga's victory over Mahishasura, and Ayudha Puja, the worship of tools, vehicles and instruments. In Eastern India, Durga Puja and Kali Puja — the latter on Amavasya of Kartika — are major annual community festivals in their own right.

Everyday and Widely Observed Worship

Saraswati Puja honours the Goddess of learning, music and the arts and is especially observed by students. Annapurna Puja is offered to the Goddess of food and nourishment. Gauri Puja and the related Mangala Gauri Puja and Hartalika Teej — observed particularly by women for marital wellbeing — along with Karva Chauth, are widely kept household vrats across North India.

The Dasha Mahavidyas

The ten Mahavidyas — Kali, Tara, Bhuvaneshwari, Bhairavi, Chinnamasta, Dhumavati, Bagalamukhi, Matangi, Kamalatmika and Lalita Tripurasundari's related forms — represent advanced Tantric-Shakta worship. The catalogue records these for completeness; several, including Bagalamukhi and Chinnamasta, are traditionally approached only under the direct guidance of a qualified guru, and Avyani does not present them as suitable for casual or unsupervised practice. Lalita Tripurasundari worship and the Lalita Sahasranama Archana — offering Her thousand names — are more widely and openly practised expressions of the same tradition.

Regional and Temple-Specific Forms

The Goddess is worshipped locally under many names and forms: Kamakhya in Assam, with the annual Ambubachi Mela; Vaishno Devi in the Trikuta hills; Meenakshi at Madurai, whose Thirukalyanam re-enacts Her wedding to Shiva; Mariamman in Tamil Nadu; and Renuka or Yellamma in the Deccan. Telangana's Bathukamma and Bonalu, and Kerala's Attukal Pongala — among the largest gatherings of women anywhere — are living regional festivals honouring the Goddess in Her own local traditions. Kumari Puja, the ritual worship of young girls as living manifestations of the Goddess, is observed particularly during Navratri.
