Rituals that mark the agrarian calendar and protect home, family and business from negative influence, drawn from Avyani's Master Puja & Ritual Catalogue.
Two smaller but distinct categories in Avyani's Master Puja & Ritual Catalogue address, respectively, the agrarian calendar and the protection of home, family and business from negative influence: four Agricultural & Seasonal rituals and eight Protection & Exorcism rituals.
Agricultural and Seasonal Rituals
Bhoomi Puja for Sowing, worship of Bhoomi Devi performed before sowing seeds, opens the agricultural season, while Rain Invocation Puja is a community ritual invoking Varuna and Indra for timely monsoon rains during drought. Cattle hold a central place in agrarian ritual life: Gopashtami Puja honours cows and Krishna as the divine cowherd, and Mattu Pongal, the second day of the Pongal harvest festival described in our Surya Rituals guide, is dedicated specifically to the worship and decoration of cattle. These sit alongside the many tribal and community harvest festivals — Karam Puja, Nuakhai, Sairat/Sarhul — described in our Regional Rituals guide.
Protection from the Evil Eye and Negative Influence
Drishti Puja (दृष्टि पूजा) is a simple, widely practised household ritual to remove the perceived effects of the evil eye (nazar), needing no priest. Raksha Kavach Dharan Vidhi is the formal consecration and wearing ceremony of a protective amulet or thread — a more elaborate counterpart to the simple Raksha Kavacha Puja described in our Health, Children and Education Rituals guide. Kaal Bhairav Raksha Puja invokes the fierce protector form of Shiva described in our Shiva Rituals guide specifically for protection.
Addressing Persistent Difficulty
Bhoot Pret Badha Nivaran Puja is performed for relief from perceived negative spiritual influences, and Grah Kalesh Nivaran Puja addresses persistent household conflict attributed to such influences — both are more involved rituals typically requiring a priest. Vastu Dosh Rakshak Puja extends protective worship specifically to a property, connecting to our Vastu and Business Rituals guide, and Business Negative Energy Removal Puja addresses the same concern for a commercial enterprise experiencing persistent setbacks. Court Case Success Puja, a Tantric worship of Bagalamukhi for favourable legal outcomes, is among the more advanced rituals in this category and, like other Tantric practices noted elsewhere in our catalogue, is undertaken only under a qualified priest's direct guidance.
